Art as a way of knowing. To create one’s own world takes courage.

Art created thousands of years ago, cave paintings, petroglyphs, decorated pottery, tools as well as carved figurines attest to a rich human heritage of knowledge expression.

Humanity evolved, with scripts being developed as a means to transfer knowledge. This seemed to be a necessity within growing, more complex societal structures where order and organisation were required as well as communication of societal laws and customs.

Whereas the artistic way of conveying knowledge, ideas, insights, spiritual knowledge were predominantly three dimensional, scripts on the other hand were more two-dimensional.

There is a sense that something gets lost in the translation from a three-dimensional to a two-dimensional system.

The two systems co-exist in each of us and provide access to different aspects of our being. Usually one is more predominant.

Linear script suits a predominantly logical, rational mind; Art is more of a way to bypass engrained mind patterns and mind speed.

It facilitates us to explore and delve deeper in more abstract ways of knowing and discovering.

Art as a way of knowing was integrated in our studies at the Barbara Brennan School of Healing. In fact, one form of art, shared with the school, was a compulsory element in order to pass each year during each of the four years at the Brennan School.

Create a shamanic drum

Birthing a drum intended for use in one’s own spiritual practice is a sacred process.

Help usually can be found from fellow shamanic practitioners, knowledgeable about shaping the wood, attaching the hide and ceremony.

This drum was birthed in the South of the UK in its basic form.

During the process, the crystal belt became a specific feature. Two shaman stones were integrated, one in the drum and second in the beater for the drum.

The drum was subsequently painted when completed and dried out.

Change the energy of the room

Redecorating a room can be a fun experience. It can also totally transform the energy of a room

This healing room, which is no longer in use in my work with clients, is still a part of my path of self-discovery, painting and exploring.

Letting go of this room was part of the transformation process into a new way of being after PKYC.

Choose your medium of expression

Are you vocally inclined? Interested in poetry? Do you like singing operas? How about dancing? Is getting your hands dirty with clay your thing? Are you a bit of clown? Or is the thought of colouring outside the lines appealing?

This was my first painting at the Barbara Brennan School of Healing. I called it ‘Angel holding a spitting cobra on a bed of lava’.

Little did I know at the time that this also connected to my Kundalini process.

Art and ‘lucid’ dream material

Working with ‘lucid dream’ material through art not only honours that dream but also enables us to focus and concentrate on the lucid dream for longer.

In a fast-paced world, distractions are common and moving on to the next desire of the mind can take us away from contemplating the deeper aspects of those dreams.

Slowing down through art is a way of allowing the lucid dream to reveal its layers of meaning.

What are ‘lucid dreams’?

Lucid dreams could be described as being awake within a dream.

From my experience, lucid dreams are very different to ‘ordinary’ dreams. The imagery is crystal clear, the quality concentrated, the context inviting and one can make choices within the dream. Even time seems to run differently in the dream.

I found it precious whenever lucid dreams happened in my life and mostly information was conveyed, at other times insights were key.

Maybe some people can plan ‘lucid’ dreams whilst sleeping.

However in my case, since my teenage years, those dreams just happened unexpectedly but mostly at crucial times in my life.

In ‘lucid dreams’ one is aware that one is dreaming whilst in the dream.

My experience of ‘lucid’ dreams

My experience of lucid dreaming has been life affirming and timely.

Past experience examples:

Looking at a graded paper to see my grades before knowing my grades;

Looking at my exam questions on the paper, just before an exam;

Go over to talk to someone in the dream;

Finding someone in a house, who shows me where my dog spending time as he is preparing to make the transition between life and death

Seeing my next path of growth, understanding and development

Those lucid dreams feel very similar to my experiences of Shamanic Journeying and Soul Retrieval.

Shamanic Journeying/Soul Retrieval however is different in that this deep state of being is sought during a waking state rather than experienced at night whilst asleep.

Give it a try!

Painting, drawing, expressing content from a Shamanic Journey or ‘lucid’ dream are only examples.

In a hectic world with ready made content from others constantly streaming in and screaming for attention, our focus and concentration risk getting drained away from our precious inner world.

We risk loosing touch with our inner streams of awareness, our innate way of knowing.

Slowing down through art, expressing inner experiences and honouring the gifts from Spirit are ways to reconnect deeper to one’s Self.

It allows us to reconnect to a slower pace, to the sweetness of life.

Sharing our art is optional, the aim being that the self finds expression as well as discovery. This is a deeply personal process.
